Torre delle Milizie

Historic site · Monti, Italy

A brick tower of about fifty metres, reached from the Salita del Grillo and entered today through the Mercati di Traiano.

History

Roma Capitale dates its construction «con ogni probabilità agli inizi del XIII secolo» — in all probability to the beginning of the thirteenth century — and attributes it to the Conti di Segni. It passed to the Annibaldi, the Prefetti di Vico and Boniface VIII Caetani, then back to the Conti until the 1600s, and was absorbed into the monastery of Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli before being isolated after 1910. An earthquake in the mid-fourteenth century brought down the third storey and started the lean. Two arms of Roma Capitale publish different years for that earthquake, so no year is given here.
