Acquedotto Vergine (Aqua Virgo)
Historic site · Trevi, Italy
Permanently closed. This page is kept for reference.
The Roman aqueduct that supplies the fountains of this part of the city, recorded by Roma Capitale under Rione: II - Trevi. It feeds the monumental fountains of the Baroque city, among them the Fontana di Trevi, which in the modern age is its terminal mostra. Arches of it survive at via del Nazareno.
History
Roma Capitale records the aqueduct as inaugurated in 19 BC by Agrippa, with its sources in the Agro Lucullano near the eighth mile of the via Collatina, at the modern locality of Salone, and a course of over 20 kilometres, predominantly underground, ending in the Campo Marzio.
At via del Nazareno three partly buried travertine arches in rusticated blocks survive at the sides of a larger fornix, identified with the arch Claudius had raised to mark his victory over the Germans, above which is set the inscription recording his rebuilding of the aqueduct in AD 46. Roma Capitale records the Acquedotto Vergine under Rione: II - Trevi and describes the arches at via del Nazareno as part of it. No source we fetched places these arches in another rione.
Roma Capitale also records two further travertine fornici beneath Palazzo Sciarra. That is the Palazzo Sciarra on via del Corso, which is not the Palazzo Sciarra Colonna di Carbognano in Trevi; the two names are close and the two buildings are not the same, so that pair of arches is not a Trevi feature.
