Valentines Mansion and Gardens

The Grade II listing was made on 10 April 1954 as list entry 1081014. The house was built in 1696 for Lady Tillotson, widow of John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Vision RCL, the registered charity that manages it for Redbridge Council, describes over 320 years of history on the site. The period rooms shown to visitors include the Drawing Room, Morning Room, Regency Parlour, Bedchamber, Victorian Kitchen and Grand Staircase, and the grounds hold the Old English Garden and the Walled Garden, with the Gardener's Cottage Cafe beside the house. Seven further structures in the immediate grounds carry their own entries at two different grades: the railings, gates and gatepiers to Valentines Park are Grade II, NHLE 1081027, while the dovecote and attached garden walls, NHLE 1081015, the canal-head grotto, NHLE 1183617, a second grotto, NHLE 1244052, the ha-ha, NHLE 1244054, the sundial, NHLE 1244053, and the Gardener's Cottage, NHLE 1360821, are each Grade II. Gants Hill station is 506 m away and Ilford station 1,463 m.
