Lambeth, London: the South Bank, Lambeth Palace, Brixton Market and West Norwood Cemetery

The riverside terrace begins at County Hall, on the Lambeth bank at the east end of Westminster Bridge. Its main block is Grade II listed, NHLE 1358192, listed on 19 October 1951. Westminster Bridge is Grade II listed on the Lambeth bank as NHLE 1066172, and the South Bank Lion at the east end of the bridge is Grade II* listed, NHLE 1068742. Several Grade II entries belong to County Hall itself: about 250 metres of river wall with 19 lamp standards, NHLE 1080571; a balustrade with five lamp standards, NHLE 1300588; and a pair of K6 telephone kiosks, NHLE 1249708 and NHLE 1263628.

The London Eye stands beside them and carries no designation of any kind. The balustrade, NHLE 1300588, is the nearest listed entry to the wheel at 70 metres, and it is County Hall's. The operator gives the opening year as 2000, the height as 135 metres, a full rotation as about 30 minutes and the capsule count as 32, numbered 1 to 33 with number 13 skipped, each capsule holding up to 28 guests and each representing one of London's boroughs. The operator publishes a value for the current day only and states that closing times vary through the year, so no daily schedule is given here.

The Royal Festival Hall on Belvedere Road is Grade I listed, NHLE 1249756, listed on 29 March 1988, and is one of six Grade I entries inside the borough; the other five are three churches, Lambeth Palace and a statue. The Bust of Nelson Mandela outside the hall is separately Grade II listed, NHLE 1435261, listed on 28 October 2016. About 90 metres away, a single Grade II listing of 4 February 2026, NHLE 1492622, covers the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery together with the terraced walkways and stairs that connect them — one entry, not three. No source states opening hours for the Royal Festival Hall or the Hayward Gallery, so none are given here.

The National Theatre on Upper Ground is Grade II* listed as Royal National Theatre, NHLE 1272324. The operator states that the building opens from 10am until 11pm, Monday to Saturday, that it holds three theatres, spacious foyers and two learning spaces, and that the Natural Dye and Wellbeing Garden on the riverside terrace is free to explore during those opening times.

Two theatres stand inland on The Cut, about 200 metres apart: the Old Vic at the Waterloo Road end and the Young Vic towards Blackfriars Road. The Old Vic is Grade II* listed as Old Vic Theatre, NHLE 1068710, and its box office in the historic building opens from 10am until the evening performance ends, Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday; the Backstage Cafe & Bar at 131 Waterloo Road, SE1 8UR opens Monday to Wednesday 8am to 11pm, Thursday and Friday 8am to midnight and Saturday 10am to midnight, and closes on Sunday. The Young Vic at 66 The Cut carries no designation, and no source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

Lambeth Palace, the Archbishop of Canterbury's London palace, stands on Lambeth Palace Road and is Grade I listed, NHLE 1116399, listed on 19 October 1951. Its garden is separately registered as a Grade II park and garden, NHLE 1000818, and the operator states that it covers just over 10 acres. The operator also states that the palace is not currently running a regular programme of guided tours, that it intends to resume them later in 2026, and that the palace gardens are closed because of ongoing works. The garden is no longer open as part of the summer HOPE open days and opens only occasionally for special events such as the National Garden Scheme day held annually in May. Three charity-hosted HOPE open days are published for 2026: 29 May with Help Musicians, 31 July with the Mothers' Union and 25 September with Arts for Dementia, with tickets sold through each charity. Four further Grade II entries sit in the precinct: the courtyard cottages wall, NHLE 1080374; the wall on the south side of the main courtyard, NHLE 1358294; a mounting block by the residential apartments, NHLE 1358295; and a K6 telephone kiosk on Lambeth Palace Road, NHLE 1249707.

Immediately next door, the Garden Museum occupies the former parish church of St Mary-at-Lambeth, Grade II listed as Church of St Mary, NHLE 1080380. It opens Monday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, and admission is £16 adult, £13 senior, £9 student, £9 for a child aged 7 to 18 and free for children aged 6 and under. The operator states that the museum was founded by Rosemary and John Nicholson in 1977 to rescue the abandoned church, which was due for demolition, and that the building is the burial place of John Tradescant, c1570 to 1638, whose tomb is the centrepiece of the courtyard garden. Three churchyard tombs are separately Grade II listed: the Tradescant family tomb, NHLE 1116214, the tomb of Admiral Bligh, NHLE 1116226, and the tomb of William Sealy, NHLE 1080381.

South along the river, the Vauxhall bridgehead carries Vauxhall Bridge, Grade II listed, NHLE 1393012, listed on 26 November 2008, and Brunswick House, Grade II listed, NHLE 1357952, listed on 26 March 1973 and now a restaurant and antiques dealer.

At Kennington the Kia Oval has been Surrey's cricket ground since 1845, which is the date the operator gives for it. Wikipedia gives the capacity as 27,500, the owner as the Duchy of Cornwall and the tenant as Surrey County Cricket Club, and records an England against Australia Test match played here on 6 to 8 September 1880. The ground carries no designation; Oval House, the former theatre building 148 metres away at 52 to 54 Kennington Oval, is Grade II listed as Oval House, NHLE 1080424. Oval Underground station is 168 metres from the ground.

Three covered arcades — Reliance Arcade, Market Row and Granville Arcade — are Grade II listed together under a single entry, NHLE 1393881, made on 31 March 2010 and named Brixton Markets - Reliance Arcade, Market Row and Granville Arcade (Brixton Village). Granville Arcade is the arcade now trading as Brixton Village, which the operator describes as Granville Arcade and Market Row together with more than 100 independent traders. No source states trading hours for the arcades, so none are given here.

About 240 metres west across Brixton Road, the Ritzy is Grade II listed as Ritzy Cinema, NHLE 1249916, listed on 10 October 1990. It faces Windrush Square, where the Bust of Sir Henry Tate outside Tate Library is separately Grade II listed, NHLE 1434203, listed on 19 April 2016, about 65 metres away. Brixton station is 221 metres north-east of the cinema and 206 metres from the market.

Brixton Windmill stands in Windmill Gardens off Blenheim Gardens, SW2 5DA, and is Grade II* listed as The Brixton Windmill, NHLE 1080573, listed on 19 October 1951. The operator describes it as a working windmill that has been at the heart of Lambeth for more than 200 years, and states that it is usually open for tours on the second weekend of every month from March to October, with tours booked in advance. It has no station within a kilometre: Brixton is 1,255 metres away, Clapham North 1,435 metres and Herne Hill 1,437 metres.

Brockwell Park is a Grade II registered park and garden, NHLE 1000794, and lies entirely inside the borough. Brockwell Hall, the house on the hilltop at the centre of the park, is separately Grade II* listed, NHLE 1080511. Brixton Water Lane, along the park's northern edge, carries at least ten separate Grade II listed terraces and villas, among them NHLE 1358222, NHLE 1358223, NHLE 1080551, NHLE 1300478, NHLE 1358242 and NHLE 1358243. Herne Hill station is 515 metres from Brockwell Hall and Tulse Hill 1,017 metres.

West Norwood Cemetery is registered as a Grade II park and garden, NHLE 1000851, under the name West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium. Lambeth holds eight registered parks and gardens in all: seven at Grade II — Brockwell Park, Kennington Park, the Lambeth Palace garden, Myatt's Fields, The Rookery, Ruskin Park and St Michael's Convent — and this one at Grade II. The Friends of West Norwood Cemetery describe it as 40 green acres and give the address as Visitor Centre, West Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, London SE27 9JU. No source states opening hours for the cemetery, so none are given here.

Inside it stands a dense cluster of separately listed monuments, at least ten of them Grade II, among them the Mausoleum of Sir Henry Tate, NHLE 1065025, the Tomb of Doctor Gideon Mantell, NHLE 1106387, the Tomb of John Britton, NHLE 1106239, and the Tomb of Alexander Berens, NHLE 1065022. The Greek Orthodox burial ground within the cemetery has its own Grade II structures, the Augustus Ralli mortuary chapel, NHLE 1064989, and the mausoleum of J P Ralli, NHLE 1357927. The Friends name burials including Mrs Beeton, Charles Spurgeon, Sir Henry Tate, Dr William Marsden and Sir Henry Doulton. West Norwood station is 152 metres from the cemetery and Tulse Hill 1,009 metres.

On Streatham Common, The Rookery is registered as a Grade II park and garden, NHLE 1000829, with a Lambeth postcode on Streatham Common North, SW16 3HS. Norwood Grove, the adjoining hilltop landscape to the south-east, is separately registered Grade II, NHLE 1000823, and lies in the London Borough of Croydon rather than in Lambeth, so it is not among Lambeth's eight. The Rookery has nothing within a kilometre: Streatham station is 1,082 metres away, Norbury 1,098 metres and Streatham Common 1,275 metres, which is why Streatham and Norwood make a separate trip from the South Bank rather than an addition to one.

Waterloo brings the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Waterloo & City lines together with South Western Railway in one station, and it is the hinge of the riverside. From it the Royal Festival Hall is 200 metres, the National Theatre 305 metres and the London Eye 416 metres. For the two Vic theatres take Waterloo East, served by Southeastern, 231 metres from the Old Vic and 178 metres from the Young Vic, or Southwark on the Jubilee line, 358 metres and 183 metres. Embankment, across the river on the Bakerloo, Circle, District and Northern lines, is 515 metres from the Royal Festival Hall.

For the palace and the museum beside it, Lambeth North on the Bakerloo line is 628 metres from Lambeth Palace and 755 metres from the Garden Museum, and it is 463 metres from County Hall; Westminster, on the Circle, District and Jubilee lines, is 557 metres from County Hall and 880 metres from the palace. River bus routes RB1 and RB6 call at London Eye Waterloo Pier, 74 metres from the wheel, at Millbank Pier, 496 metres from the Garden Museum across the river, and at Vauxhall St George Wharf Pier, 160 metres from the Vauxhall bridgehead. Lambeth Pier, 181 metres from Lambeth Palace, carries no river bus service.

South of the river the Northern line serves Kennington: Oval is 168 metres from the Kia Oval, Kennington 814 metres, and Vauxhall, on the Victoria line and South Western Railway, 713 metres. Take the Victoria line to Brixton, its southern terminus, where tube and national rail share a single station served by the Victoria line and Southeastern; the market is 206 metres away and the Ritzy 221 metres. Brixton Windmill is 1,255 metres from that station.

Beyond Brockwell Park the network is national rail alone. Herne Hill, on Southeastern and Thameslink, is 515 metres from Brockwell Hall, and Tulse Hill, on Southern and Thameslink, is 1,017 metres. West Norwood, on Southern, is 152 metres from the cemetery. The Rookery is a 1,082-metre climb from Streatham station. London Overground's Windrush line calls at Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road, both inside the borough, and the borough has no DLR, no Elizabeth line and no tram service.
