Inner Sunset, San Francisco: Irving Street, Grand View Park and the Mount Sutro trails

The commercial ground is two streets meeting at 9th Avenue and Irving Street. The Old Fire House at 1348 10th Avenue is San Francisco Landmark No. 29, designated in 1970: built in 1898 to a design by Charles Wilson, in a style San Francisco Planning records as Altered Shingle, with wide double doors and a tall hose drying tower. The Sunset Branch Library at 1301-1305 18th Avenue is San Francisco Landmark No. 239, designated in 2004; it was built in 1917 and opened on March 25, 1918. The Doelger Building at 320-326 Judah Street is San Francisco Landmark No. 265, designated in 2013, and merges Art Deco and Streamline Moderne in its stepped tower entrance, glass block windows and speedline canopy.

Bernard Zakheim painted the fresco cycle History of Medicine in California at UC Hall, 533 Parnassus Avenue, between 1936 and 1938, with his assistant Phyllis Wrightson and with part of the funding coming through the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project: 12 panels, 10 pictorial and 2 descriptive. The frescoes are San Francisco Landmark No. 289, designated in 2020. They were taken out of the building in 2021 and UC Hall was demolished.

Grand View Park is a San Francisco Recreation and Park property of 4.14 acres at 1730 15th Avenue, bounded by 14th and 15th Avenues and Noriega Street, open 5am to midnight. Its summit is about 666 feet (203 m) and is crowned with Monterey cypress trees. The hill is an outcrop of chert, which is part of the heterogeneous assemblage known as the Franciscan Formation, under a thin layer of sand, and it carries endangered Franciscan wallflower and dune tansy alongside bush lupin, beach strawberry, bush monkey flower and coyote bush. Residents call it Turtle Hill; the City's property name is Grand View Park.

The mosaic stairway climbs Moraga Street between 15th and 16th Avenues: 163 steps stretching 90 feet (27 m) high, faced with over 2,000 unique tiles from over 75,000 glass fragments, made by Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher. Residents Jessie Audette and Alice Yee Xavier began the project in 2003, the steps were built in July and August 2005, and they opened August 27, 2005.

Mount Sutro is the high wooded ground. UCSF owns and manages 61 acres of Mount Sutro and San Francisco Recreation & Parks manages 20 acres on the east side; UCSF's own site calls it a vibrant, 61-acre open space reserve owned by UCSF as well as campus housing nestled amongst the trees. Sutro Stewards gives the trail network as over 5.5 miles; UCSF's own site gives more than 5 miles and a 900-foot elevation gain. The Interior Greenbelt, 21.37 acres, is the city property on the same slopes and the register gives it no street address either. UCSF's own site calls Parnassus Heights the original UCSF campus, made up of a tight network of buildings where faculty, staff, students and others are engaged in patient care, research and education activities, covering almost six blocks.
