Cape Arundel Golf Club: Golf in Kennebunkport, Maine

Cape Arundel Golf Club is at 19 River Road, Kennebunkport, Maine 04046. River Road runs the Kennebunkport/Arundel town line, which produces a small oddity worth knowing if you are matching addresses: the Census address geocoder places 19 River Road in Arundel town, while the coordinate at the centre of the course itself falls in Kennebunkport town. Both return York County, and the club's own mailing city and the ranking's own subtitle both read Kennebunkport. The nearest major commercial airport is Portland International Jetport, PWM, whose own site is titled "Home | Portland International Jetport". The road route from the airport to the club is 25.56 miles, and the mileage sits on five named roads: I-95, which the router names the Maine Turnpike, 13.85 miles; Log Cabin Road, 3.63 miles; U.S. Route 1, 3.46 miles across two named segments; Precourt Street, 0.82 miles; and North Street, 0.60 miles. Boston Logan International, BOS, is 86.42 road miles. Portsmouth International Airport at Pease, PSM, in New Hampshire, sits between the two: routings taken from two different points inside the airport grounds returned 38.60 miles and 35.33 miles, and this guide does not choose between them — either way PSM is well behind PWM, which is both the nearest and the one with the fuller schedule. The club's history page opens: "Founded in 1896 as the Kennebunkport Golf Club, Cape Arundel Golf Club was created by summer residents and golf enthusiasts who wanted to bring their love of the game home. At its founding, Cape Arundel was one of just 74 golf clubs in the United States." Golf Digest's own stored record for the course gives a year opened of 1897. The club says 1896; both are recorded here rather than reconciled. The course a visitor plays is not the original one: "By the early twenties it was apparent that the original course had outlived its usefulness… The architectural skills of U.S. and British Amateur Champion Walter J. Travis were secured to produce the new links style layout. Every hole was planned carefully by Travis." Golf Digest dates that work more precisely — "Designed by Walter Travis in 1921" — while the club says only "the early twenties." Again, both stand. Travis, the club writes, was "known as 'The Old Man'" and "the most successful amateur golfer in the United States in the early 1900's," believed to have had a hand in more than 50 courses, among them Garden City Golf Club, Ekwanok, Hollywood and Westchester Country Club. Cape Arundel is a member of the Walter J. Travis Society and of the United States Golf Association. Length is this course's signature, and the sources do not quite agree on it. Golf Digest's prose reads: "Despite a length of just 5,859 yards, Cape Arundel packs plenty of punch to both challenge and engage golfers of all skill levels. Designed by Walter Travis in 1921, Cape Arundel is at its best around the greens. The green complexes are small, yet undulating, and provide plenty of opportunities to putt off them… The pin locations dictate the strategy from the tee… meaning the course doesn't play the same from one day to the next." The same page's own stored record for the course gives 5,881 yards, par 70, course rating 67 and slope 121 over 18 holes. Neither yardage is preferred here. The property's protected status was checked against the issuing authority rather than taken from the club's word for it. The National Park Service register record, NRIS ID 09000879, reads: Title, Cape Arundel Golf Club; Architects, Travis, Walter J. and Senat, Prosper L.; Architectural Styles, BUNGALOW/CRAFTSMAN; Resource Type, DISTRICT; Date Published, 11/4/2009; Locations, State: Maine, County: York County, Kennebunkport, 19 River Rd. Two things there that the club's own page omits: Prosper L. Senat is recorded alongside Travis, and the listing is a historic district rather than a single building. The clubhouse is part of that district. "First constructed in 1900, Cape Arundel Golf Club's historic hunter green clubhouse overlooking the Kennebunk River was renamed 41 House in 2011 to honor the club's most famous member and 41st President of the United States George H.W. Bush… Join us on the porch after your round!" Bush was the club's 1947 Club Champion. The Walker Cup is named for his uncle George Herbert Walker, "a lifelong member of Cape Arundel, President of the Club from 1949–1954, and President of the USGA." The club records that four Presidents have played the course — "Nixon, Bush, Clinton, and Bush" — alongside Babe Ruth, Francis Ouimet, Arnold Palmer, Charles Lindbergh, Dottie Pepper, Rod Laver, Fred Couples, Jane Blalock, Davis Love, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Sandra Haynie, David Toms, Greg Norman, Doug Sanders, Brad Faxon, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin and Jose-Maria Olazabal. "The course record of 60 was recorded on October 2, 2006 by Mickelson." On accolades, one claim on the club's homepage was checked by fetching the list it names, and it holds: GOLF's Top 100 Courses You Can Play carries Cape Arundel at position 64 in the list's own structured data. The edition is ambiguous — that page's own address says 2020-21 while its title says 2021-22, and the club names no edition. A second claim in the same sentence does not hold. The club states it is "#1 in Maine by GOLF Magazine, Golf Digest, and Golfweek." Golf Digest's 2025-'26 Maine ranking reads 2, and the club's own entry on that ranking records "Previous rank: 1" — the claim was true of the prior edition and has not been updated. The GOLF Magazine and Golfweek halves of the sentence were not checked, and are not published here.

Golf Digest labels the entry "Public," and its stored record for the course reads facility type "Daily Fee," private false. The operator's own words are different and more precise. Its About page: "Cape Arundel is a private club which welcomes public play and is known for its beauty along the shores of Kennebunkport, Maine." Its booking page: "Public tee times may only be booked over the phone. Dial (207) 967-3494 to call our Golf Shop and we'll be pleased to help! Public players may book 3 days in advance." The Maine state golf association's course finder records the club as semi-private — a third description again. Three labels, one behaviour: a non-member telephones the Golf Shop three days ahead and plays. What is absent matters as much as what is written. The operator's site was searched page by page for "sponsor," "reciproc," "accompanied," "must be a member," "introduced by," "referral" and "invitation," and for any day-of-week limit on public play — "weekend," "Monday," "Tuesday," "not available," "restrict," "blackout." There is no member sponsorship, no referral, no reciprocal-club requirement and no host relationship published anywhere, and no day of the week is closed to public players. The three-day window and the telephone channel are the entire constraint. That silence is a real one, not merely an unwritten rule: the second course in this guide, at 4.53 miles, does publish a day-of-week blackout, so the point is one operators in this area do address when it applies. The rest of what the club asks of a visitor is on its Guest Information page: "Cape Arundel is a soft spike only facility. Dress Code: Gentlemen must wear collared or mock turtleneck shirts. Jeans, tank tops, gym shorts, and sweats are not permitted. Telephone calls and music are not allowed on the golf course." A pace-of-play expectation is stated on the same page. On practice: "After checking in, golfers are welcome to use the putting and chipping green next to 41 House. Cape Arundel's driving range is Members Only" — the range is the only member-only facility the club names. On food: "Cape Arundel does not have a bar and only provides limited on-course food service in July and August." This guide publishes no green fee for Cape Arundel. The club's Golf page does carry figures, but the page is headed only "Golf" and attaches no year or effective date to the rate table; the only 2026 anywhere on it is the site-wide copyright line. A fee is publishable in this set only with the operator's own dated qualifier, so no number is printed. Golf Digest stores a price of its own for the course; it is a third party's figure, it is also undated, and it does not match the club's own table, so it is not printed either. Telephone the Golf Shop on (207) 967-3494 and ask. One limit is worth stating honestly. Because the only public booking channel is a telephone call, neither the research behind this guide nor its independent check could complete a booking end to end. That a stranger's call is accepted is read from the operator's published terms, which impose no member connection, and from GOLF placing the course on a list titled Top 100 Courses You Can Play. It is not demonstrated.

Cape Arundel is a seasonal course, and its operator never says when the season begins or ends. The club's own rate table is keyed to the words "Opening" and "Closing" as named events with no dates attached to either — in the live table, and in archived captures of the same page from 2024 and from 2025. Thirteen public pages of the site were scanned for closure, aeration, renovation, flood and season language, with every hit tested for whether it sat inside an HTML comment, so that a disabled notice could not be resurrected by a tag-strip and a live one could not be missed. The result: zero course-closure notices, zero aeration, zero renovation, zero flooding, and no opening or closing phrase of any kind. The site styles an announcement mechanism and carries no announcement content inside it. Fourteen archived captures of the homepage spanning April 2024 to December 2025 — among them deep-winter captures from 21 January 2025, 18 February 2025 and 23 December 2025 — return the same nothing. The January capture is structurally the same page as the July one: no seasonal banner is ever raised or lowered. The club's own public calendar renders an empty month grid with filters for Golf Clinics and Golf Lessons, no events and no season markers. The usual test cannot be run here either. Where a course has an online tee sheet you can bound the bookable window at both ends and tell a real closure from a rolling booking horizon. Cape Arundel has no public booking engine at all — "Public tee times may only be booked over the phone" — so there is no queryable surface to bound. That is the absence of a testable surface, not a failed test. What follows is worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over. The course is demonstrably not year-round, its operator publishes no opening date and no closing date, and whether it is open on any particular date is unverified from the operator. In coastal Maine that absence is a thing to plan around. The one calendar detail the club does give is about food, not golf: on-course service is limited to July and August. Telephone the Golf Shop before travelling. For context only, and establishing nothing about Cape Arundel's own dates: two other operators in the area do publish theirs. Nunan's Lobster Hut states it is "open for the season May 21st, 2026 through October 17th, 2026," and Merriland Farm in Wells publishes "We are opening May 1, 2026!"

The second course here is the nearest other course, not the next one down the ranking. Every golf-course feature within 60 kilometres of the first tee was swept and then walked outward by road distance. Exactly one lies nearer than Webhannet: Cape Arundel Golf Club Practice Area, at 0.71 road miles, which is the chosen club's own practice ground under the same operator — and that operator states its driving range is Members Only. A practice loop is not a second round, so it was excluded. That leaves Webhannet Golf Club, 26 Golf Club Drive, Kennebunk, York County, at 4.53 road miles by River Road, North Street, Maine Street, Spring Street, Dock Square, Western Avenue (ME 9), Sea Road, Beach Avenue, Railroad Avenue, Woodland Avenue, Central Avenue and Golf Club Drive. The ordering closes arithmetically rather than by luck: a road route can never be shorter than a straight line, and the third-nearest golf feature in the entire sweep lies 8.54 kilometres out in a straight line — 5.31 miles before a single road is driven. Nothing in the radius can beat 4.53 road miles. Maine's own state golf association, whose course finder stores its clubs with coordinates and is not derived from the same map data, independently puts Webhannet nearest, with nothing between the two. The club's own description: "Webhannet is an 18-hole par 71 course that plays a surprisingly long 6100 yards from the blue tees. The front nine is a par 35 showcasing three of the toughest par-3's in Maine. Tidal-fed water hazards, strategically-situated white sand traps and bent grass greens with subtle breaks are among the design features that challenge golfers of every skill level." All eighteen holes are set out by name, yardage from three sets of tees, par and handicap. The club was founded in 1901 and "nestles in the quaint Kennebunk Beach neighborhood of historic homes and seaside cottages." Unlike Cape Arundel, Webhannet publishes its season: "Webhannet is a semi-private golf club that warmly welcomes visitors and vacationers mid-April through mid-October." It also publishes a visitor calendar that a weekend traveller must read before planning anything: "As a semi-private golf club, we have limited tee times available for visitor play which differ throughout the season: Opening day through May 21st: Monday through Friday — one tee time per hour; Weekends — one tee time per hour after 12pm. May 22nd through September 14th: Monday through Wednesday (with the exception of holiday weeks) — one tee time per hour. No tee times are available Thursday through Sunday. September 15th through closing: Monday through Friday — one tee time per hour; Weekends — one tee time per hour after 12pm. Please contact the pro shop to make a tee time. Visitor tee times may only be made three days in advance." Between 22 May and 14 September — the heart of the Maine season — a visitor plays Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, one group per hour, and not at all from Thursday through Sunday. That is a restriction on when, not on who; a non-member can play at a published rate on published days. As at Cape Arundel, though, the visitor rates sit under a heading that carries no year, so no fee is printed here. Telephone the pro shop on (207) 967-2061.

Kennebunkport is the basecamp because the club is not one: Cape Arundel has no lodging, no bar, and on-course food only in July and August. Dock Square is 1.18 road miles from the first tee, and the route out to Webhannet runs through it. The Nonantum Resort, 95 Ocean Avenue, is 1.85 road miles from the first tee by River Road, North Street, Maine Street, Spring Street and Ocean Avenue. In its own words: "Family-owned and warmly welcoming, The Nonantum has been a place people return to for generations. Set along the Kennebunk River in Kennebunkport, our waterfront resort blends classic Maine character with an easy, well-cared-for stay." It lends bicycles and kayaks at no charge, runs a shuttle into town and to the beach, and keeps a heated saltwater pool. Two restaurants sit on the property, Heckmans and Latitudes, along with Camp Nonantum for children. Read its season line before booking an autumn trip: the resort's own booking engine describes it as "Open seasonally and located in one of New England's most famous seaside villages" — seasonal in the operator's own words, with no opening or closing date named. Two of its amenities do carry dates: the activities programme runs mid-June to Labor Day, and the outdoor heated pool is open Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Cape Arundel Inn & Resort — Main House at 208 Ocean Avenue, Club House at 8 Old Fort Avenue — is 2.93 road miles from the first tee by River Road, North Street, Maine Street, Spring Street, Ocean Avenue and Summit Avenue. It shares the Cape Arundel name with the golf club and is part of the Kennebunkport Resort Collection. "Shimmering ocean views, excellent dining, and traditional seaside splendor await your visit at the Cape Arundel Inn & Resort. Perched on the spellbinding coast of southern Maine, this one-of-a-kind New England inn provides a laid-back respite." Three settings sit on the one property: The Club House, "Formerly known as the Old Fort Estate"; The Main House; and Ivy Cottage, "a luxurious cottage where seaside charm meets an enriched farmhouse touch," for up to six guests. "With architecture dating back to the 1890s, these gracious estates have been updated with care while their historic character has been beautifully preserved." Its restaurant, Ocean, serves "Dinner | Nightly, 5-9PM" and publishes "a three-course prix-fixe menu priced at $105++ per person and a four-course menu priced at $125++ per person," with a chef's wine pairing at $60++ and $68++ and an à la carte menu also offered. Unlike the Nonantum, this property publishes no season statement in either direction — not on its own site, not on the collection's, not in its booking engine — so its openness on a given date is undetermined here, and this guide claims nothing about it. Alisson's Restaurant, 11 Dock Square, is 1.18 road miles from the first tee, in the middle of the square the Webhannet route passes through. It is the one business in this guide that states it trades all year: "Located in the center of Dock Square, Alisson's has been a Kennebunkport tradition since 1973. Serving lunch & dinner with a full bar, every day, year-round." Hours, as the operator gives them: "Open Every Day — Lunch 11am-4pm, Dinner 4pm-9pm, Full Bar Open Later." And: "We do not accept reservations" — a wait-list form is offered instead. The story is a family one. "Our story began in November of 1973, when local couple Beatrice and Francis 'B & Fran' Condon purchased the former Smith's Market and Chat & Chew Restaurant… The inspiration came from their oldest grandchild, Alisson, who was often serenaded by her Uncle Scott with a playful rendition of Arlo Guthrie's classic 'Alice's Restaurant.'" It stayed "a cozy 35-seat restaurant until 1984," when the founders' eldest son and daughter, Mike Condon and Pam Padget, bought the business and added a bar and dining room on the main floor "along with a 50-seat dining room upstairs." A fourth generation of the family has since joined the team, and the page lists 26 local craft beers on tap, changing daily. Nunan's Lobster Hut, 9 Mills Road in the Cape Porpoise village, is 3.32 road miles from the first tee by River Road, North Street, Maine Street and ME 9. It publishes the only fully dated season in this guide: "We are open for the season May 21st, 2026 through October 17th, 2026. We are open at 5 p.m 7 nights a week." Plan around that — it is shut for roughly seven months of the year. "We are celebrating our 73rd year… Our lobster dinners are served the same way they were in 1953. Fresh, locally caught lobster, cooked to order, no frills, simple and delicious." Two practical terms it states plainly: "No Reservations - No Credit/Debit Cards. Personal Checks Accepted With Valid Identification. ATM Available." If you would rather eat where you sleep, Heckmans at The Nonantum keeps "Wednesday - Sunday: 4:00PM – 10:30PM. Food Served Until 9:00PM. Monday & Tuesday: CLOSED."
