Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Planning was initiated in 1945 by Samuel Belkin, president of Yeshiva University. The college was founded in 1953; Albert Einstein agreed to lend his name on March 14, 1953, and the first class of 56 students arrived on September 12, 1955. It was the first new medical school to open in New York City since 1897 and the first in the United States to open under Jewish auspices. The site was chosen for ample land and proximity to the adjacent Bronx Municipal Hospital, then under construction. By 2008 expansion, including a $225 million research complex, had doubled the size of Einstein's campus to nearly 40 acres.
