Catacomba di Balbina
Historic site · Ardeatino, Italy
The third funerary area of the callistian complex, between via Appia Antica and via Ardeatina. It is named in three early sources: the Depositio episcoporum, which records the burial of Pope Mark above ground in Balbinae between January and October 336; the Index coemeteriorum vetus, which calls it cymiterium Balbinae ad sanctum Marcum; and an inscription of one Sabinus reading in cymiteriu Balbinae in cripta noba. The identification of the site with the Balbina of those texts remains uncertain, and that uncertainty is part of the record. No visiting arrangements are stated for it, so none are given here.
History
On 3 September 1991 the Salesian Tarcisio Gazzola noticed, in a field of lucerne, marks tracing the plan of a circiform basilica 66 metres long and 27 metres wide, which has been identified with the Marcian basilica named in the sources. The remains lie on via Ardeatina and are treated here as part of this record rather than as a separate site.
