Forte Appia Antica
Historic site · Ardeatino, Italy
One of the fifteen forts built round Rome between 1877 and 1891, standing at the fourth kilometre of via Appia Antica. Work began in 1877 and finished in 1880, over more than 16.5 hectares. Its own article places it in the quartiere Q. XX Ardeatino, in the territory of Municipio Roma VIII. No public access is stated, so none is described here.
History
Until the 1910s the fort housed the Artillery Directorate of the Corpo Aeronautico. Between the 1980s and the 1990s it was the data-processing centre of the Aeronautica Militare's Reparto Sistemi Informativi Automatizzati, which still uses part of it as a store.
