Basilica di Sant'Antonio da Padova all'Esquilino

Historic site · Esquilino, Italy

A minor basilica on via Merulana, also called Sant'Antonio al Laterano. The friary's own site gives the address as via Merulana 124 and its approaches as metro A at Manzoni, metro B at Colosseo and tram 3 at Manzoni/Merulana.

History

It was built between 1884 and 1888 by Luca Carimini, for Bernardino da Portogruaro and the Order of Friars Minor, who came here after being expropriated of their convent at the Ara Coeli for the building of the monument to Victor Emmanuel II. Pius XI raised it to minor basilica in July 1931.
