Italian Wikipedia dates the present church to the sixteenth century and says it replaced an older church that Pius IV had demolished because it blocked the field of fire of Castel Sant'Angelo's guns; that article gives no year for the demolition and neither does this guide. For the same defensive reason the dome is very flat and has no drum. No architect is named here: the same encyclopedia credits Vignola in its infobox, a Bolognese called Alex Tica in its body text, and G. S. Peruzzi in its article on the rione — three attributions inside one source. The church was built on Borgo Nuovo, so when via della Conciliazione was cut it stayed aligned to the vanished street rather than to the new one, and steps had to be added because the new roadbed sits lower.
