Building at 1813–1813B Sutter Street

An Italianate Victorian house on Sutter Street, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 8 March 1973, reference number 73000443. The nomination describes a two-storey angled bay window on the east side reaching almost to the ground, round-headed double-hung windows flanked by flat pilasters, a carved pierced wooden detail above the doorway arch, a wooden keystone over the upstairs window, a rusticated facade, and a flat roof projecting to a dominant cornice on eave brackets. The floor area is 1,679 square feet.
History
The San Francisco Water Department records show this building as being connected to the water system in 1876. The original owner was Mr. or Ms. Gantzer, who lived at 417 Kearny Street, and the structure was built as a rental property; six owners followed before the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency bought it, and all of the previous owners were absentee landlords. It survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, and its uses have included a bonsai store and a Japanese church. The house stood at 1624 Post Street and was moved to Block 685, Lot 30, into a row of Italianate Victorians on Sutter near Buchanan. Enid T. Sales, Rehabilitation Supervisor, and Susan Bragstad, Architect, prepared the nomination on 9 January 1973.
