Ninfeo dell'Uccelliera di Villa Celimontana

Roma Capitale describes a stair rising from the avenue between landings paved in polychrome mosaic showing an eagle, the Mattei heraldic device. The apsed nymphaeum has a lower band faced in tartari — marble chips, pumice cubes and calcareous concretions set as mosaic in geometric modules — and an upper zone of coloured plaster with multicoloured marble fragments and groups of shells, with grotesque figures in the central zone; masonry seats faced in peperino run round the apse. In 1613 a sculptor recorded only as Battista made a triton on a sea horse for a fountain here, removed in the eighteenth century when the nymphaeum became a shaded resting place.
