Parco archeologico del Celio

A public park on the north-west shoulder of the Caelian facing the Colosseum, with the Museo della Forma Urbis and the Casina del Salvi inside it. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina gives three entrances — Viale del Parco del Celio 20, Viale del Parco del Celio 22 and Clivo di Scauro 4 — free entry, and opening from 7.00 to 17.30 in winter and 7.00 to 20.00 in summer, closed on 25 December and 1 May. Its information line is 060608, 09.00 to 19.00 daily. The Sovrintendenza states that the archaeological area and the museum are accessible to all. The garden displays epigraphic and architectural finds from the excavations of the late nineteenth century, arranged in thematic groups.

History

Roma Capitale gives the sequence: the Cornovaglia family held the ground as a vineyard from the sixteenth century; under the Napoleonic administration the French dumped spoil from the Forum and Colosseum excavations here, producing the artificial terrace; in 1835 Gregory XVI turned the resulting garden into a passeggiata pubblica and Gaspare Salvi laid the avenues and built the Casina; in 1847 both Casina and park passed to the Comune by Motu Proprio of Pius IX. The Ex Antiquarium Comunale went up from 1884 in the northern part and the Ex Palestra della GIL was completed in 1929 in the south. Viale del Parco del Celio, which carried the post-war tram line, divides the park in two.
