Parco di San Gregorio al Celio

A park of 1.9 hectares on the western slope of the Caelian, formed out of the old kitchen garden of the monastery of San Gregorio and reached by a stair from the salita di San Gregorio lined with olives. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina places it in Municipio I, Rione XIX - Celio, and gives its bounds as Villa Celimontana to the east, the Semenzaio Comunale to the south, via Valle delle Camene to the west and the conventual complex of Santi Andrea e Gregorio Magno to the north. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

History

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina relates the original settlement to the palace or villa of Gordianus, father of Gregory the Great, which Gregory turned into a hermitage around 580. The first monastery had, as well as the church and the oratory to St Andrew, a library, a guest house, a granary and a stable. It passed to Greek Basilian monks in the eighth century, back to the Benedictines in the first half of the tenth, and definitively to the Camaldolese in 1573. Surviving service buildings include a medieval house restructured in the late fifteenth century, a small casale that is now the park keeper's lodge, and a former vaccheria.
