Chiesa dei Santi Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari (San Carlo ai Catinari)
Historic site · Sant'Eustachio, Italy
The Barnabite church built in honour of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo, which Roma Capitale states sorge nel rione Sant'Eustachio although its address is on a square in the neighbouring rione. The name ai Catinari comes from the basin-makers' shops of the quarter. Roma Capitale gives Mass on Monday to Saturday at 08.00 and on Sundays and feasts at 10.00, and states that in summer the 10.30 Sunday celebration is kept.
History
The Barnabites commissioned Rosato Rosati and the church was built in 1620 on the site of a small twelfth-century church. Giovanni Battista Soria built the two-order travertine facade about 1635 to 1638, its frieze cut with the name of Cardinal Leni, who paid for it. Rosati's dome, finished in 1620, rises on a tall drum with twelve pilaster strips and arched windows between them. The interior is an elongated Greek cross that took its present form in 1646 with the rebuilding of the apse, and was restored in 1897 for the canonisation of Antonio Maria Zaccaria, founder of the Barnabites. Domenichino painted the four cardinal virtues on the pendentives between 1627 and 1630 and Giovanni Lanfranco the apse semi-dome in 1646. Martino Longhi the Younger built the high altar under Borromeo's motto Humilitas, carrying Pietro da Cortona's canvas of Borromeo bearing the Holy Nail in procession during the Milan plague, placed in 1667. There are also works by Mattia and Gregorio Preti on the counter-facade, Lanfranco's Annunciazione of 1624, Giacinto Brandi's Martirio di San Biagio of 1678, Antonio Gherardi's Santa Cecilia, Francesco Romanelli's Martiri Persiani and Andrea Sacchi's Morte di Sant'Anna. The Rieger organ, Opus 600, was built in 1897 to Filippo Capocci's tonal design and restored in 1995 by Angelo Carbonetti.
