Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, later Clement VII, founded the church in 1518; Domenico Fontana completed it in 1589 to a design by Giacomo Della Porta. The travertine late-Renaissance facade has five bays and a triangular pediment carrying the arms of France, with statues of Charlemagne, Louis IX, St Clotilde and St Joan of Valois carved by Pierre Lestache in 1758. The Contarelli chapel is named for Cardinal Mathieu Cointrel, and its vault was frescoed by the Cavalier d'Arpino. The second chapel on the right, of St Cecilia, has frescoes by Domenichino and an altarpiece by Guido Reni; the organ is Joseph Merklin's, of 1881. Pauline de Beaumont, whose tomb Chateaubriand built, Cardinal de Bernis and Frederic Bastiat are buried here.
