Chiesa di San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi

Tradition puts a foundation in the eighth century; more probably the Flemish community in Rome built a hospice with a chapel in the eleventh, and Robert II of Flanders, in Rome in 1096 for Urban II's crusade, is said to have stayed and restored it. The first documentary mention is 1444, the date of the statutes of the Confraternita dei Fiamminghi. Between 1680 and 1682 the confraternity enlarged the church, turning a Latin-cross plan into an oval with eight columns. The hospice closed with the French Revolution and became the Belgian college, now on via Aurelia. The small facade is set into the former hospice, with the Lion of Flanders on the portal and a modern copy of Jodocus Haerts' seventeenth-century elm statue in the upper niche, the original kept inside. The vault carries the arms of Bruges, Ghent and Ypres and a Glory of St Julian frescoed in the early eighteenth century by William Kent; Matthieu Kessels carved the monument to Ludovica de Timbrune-Valence in 1830.
