Chiesa di San Gregorio della Divina Pietà

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Italy

A small church facing ponte Fabricio, also called San Gregorio al Ponte Quattro Capi and San Gregorietto ai Quattro Capi. it.wikipedia gives it as in rione Sant'Angelo.

History

The first certain notice of the church is of 1403. It was restored in 1729 to designs by Filippo Barigioni for Benedict XIII and given to the Congregazione degli Operai della Divina Pietà, from which its name comes; the original alms box survives on the right side. It was restored again in 1858, when the bilingual inscription in Hebrew and Latin carrying a passage of scripture was set on the facade. The forced sermons imposed on the Jews of the ghetto under papal rule were preached here, and the double inscription records the practice.
