Chiesa di Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli
Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Italy
The church on piazza di Campitelli, in rione Sant'Angelo in spite of the name it carries. Its parish site gives Mass at 10.00 and 18.30 on feast days and 7.30 and 18.30 on weekdays.
History
it.wikipedia records that the building belonged originally to rione Campitelli and was attributed to rione Sant'Angelo when Sant'Angelo's boundaries were extended around the middle of the twentieth century, after the clearances of the Fascist period. Clement VIII gave the older church to St John Leonardi and the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God on 4 August 1601. Rebuilding on the present site began on 29 September 1661, to Carlo Rainaldi, commissioned by Alexander VII to mark the end of the plague of 1656 and to house the Marian icon.
