Edificio delle Poste, Telegrafi e Telefoni

Historic site · EUR, Italy

The E42 post and telegraph building on Viale Beethoven, designed by the Milanese studio BBPR: Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti and Ernesto Nathan Rogers. It is still a working post office.

History

Construction was ratified on 27 July 1938 and the works ran from June 1939 to 24 August 1942, with interior work continuing to 10 June 1943. Rogers was forced off the project under the fascist racial laws, and with Banfi and Belgiojoso away on war service Peressutti alone saw the building through. It was occupied by German and then American troops between 1943 and 1947 as the postal and telephone centre for southern Rome, and reopened for the agricultural exposition of 1953.
