Obelisco di Marconi

Arturo Dazzi's obelisk to Guglielmo Marconi, standing at the centre of the elliptical lawn in the middle of the square, on the axis of via Cristoforo Colombo. It is a truncated pyramid of reinforced concrete faced with 92 slabs of Carrara marble carrying high reliefs in four rows, and is given a height of 45 m.
History
The Ministero della Cultura Popolare commissioned it in 1939 for what was then piazza Imperiale. Work stopped in 1940 with two registers cut, resumed in 1951, and the obelisk was inaugurated on 12 December 1959.
