History
The museum was founded in 2016 as an institute with special autonomy of the Ministero della Cultura, and extends over about 50,000 m2 of galleries and stores. The Palazzo delle Scienze was built between 1938 and 1943 by Luigi Brusa, Gino Cancellotti, Eugenio Montuori and Alfredo Scalpelli, working in Marcello Piacentini's team; the Palazzo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari was designed in 1938 and built by 1942 by Massimo Castellazzi, Pietro Morresi and Annibale Vitellozzi, as a mirror image of the first around a colonnaded courtyard. The museum names the works a visitor can look for: in the atrium of the Palazzo delle Scienze, two murals by Valerio Fraschetti, La scuola di Galileo and Le applicazioni tecniche della scienza, the second left as preparatory ground when the war stopped work; above the monumental staircase the polychrome window by Giulio Rosso of 1941 to 1942; in the Salone delle Scienze the marble intarsia floor by Mario Tozzi of 1943; and in the other palazzo the marble relief Elementi caratteristici del folklore by Amerigo Tot. Two exterior mosaics of 1942 face each other across the flank of the square, Fortunato Depero's Le professioni e le arti and Enrico Prampolini's Le Corporazioni.
