Fontana del Mose

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina's record for this fountain also carries a Rione field reading Castro Pretorio. The Sovrintendenza says the fountain was erected between 1585 and 1589 as the terminal mostra of the Acquedotto Felice, willed by Sixtus V - Felice Peretti, from whom the aqueduct takes its name - and gives the authors as Giovanni Fontana and Domenico Fontana, in travertine, marble and stucco, in the form of a triumphal arch of three bays. The colossal Moses is by Prospero Antichi, finished by Leonardo Sormani; the side reliefs are of Aaron by Gian Battista della Porta and of Gideon by Pietro Paolo Olivieri and Flaminio Vacca. The four antique porphyry and marble lions at the basins were replaced in 1850 by bardiglio lions by Adamo Tadolini. The travertine balustrade was made under Pius IV for the Belvedere courtyard in the Vatican and reused here. The cornice carries the dates 1585-1587. The Sovrintendenza records restorations in 1850-51 and 1987-89 and maintenance in 2010-11.

One caution: Turismo Roma has a separate record called Acquedotto Felice, but it points at Via Lemonia in the Parco degli Acquedotti, on the other side of the city. It is not this fountain and the two should not be joined.
