Fontana della Barcaccia

Historic site · Campo Marzio, Italy

The boat-shaped fountain in piazza di Spagna, built 1626 to 1629. Roma Capitale attributes it to Pietro Bernini, father of Gian Lorenzo; it.wikipedia gives it to Pietro Bernini and his son.

History

The boat has an identical bow and stern in an oval basin, and gunwales low enough that it reads as sinking. Two large coats of arms of Urban VIII, with three bees, are set on the outside of bow and stern, with water issuing from mock gunports at their sides. Roma Capitale connects the name with the boats used on the Tiber at the port of Ripetta, and its Sovrintendenza also records the naumachia tradition and the Tiber floods that carried boats up to the foot of Trinità dei Monti as rival explanations.
