Murphy Windmill
Historic site · Golden Gate Park, California
The windmill at the southwest corner of the park, 95 feet tall with a span of 114 feet. It has a massive concrete foundation supporting a wood-framed tower covered with slate roofing shingles, and is sometimes referred to as the English Windmill. San Francisco Landmark No. 210, designated in 2000, recorded on the Article 10 register as Murphy Windmill and Millwright's Cottage.
History
It was built in 1905 with funds donated by Samuel Murphy, with a capacity of 40,000 gallons per hour, and was said to be designed after English style windmills. The windmill was not used for pumping water after 1913, when electric pumps were installed.
