Museo Atelier Canova-Tadolini

Museum · Campo Marzio, Italy

A sculptor's studio kept as a museum with a café and restaurant inside it, at the corner of via del Babuino and via dei Greci. Its own site gives the bar and caffetteria as open daily 08.00 to 24.00 and the restaurant daily 12.00 to 23.00.

History

Roma Capitale records that in January 1818 Antonio Canova signed to guarantee the lease of his studio di uso di cultura in favour of his pupil Adamo Tadolini, with leave to reproduce some of his works, and that Canova had himself worked in the rooms. The atelier remained Tadolini family property from 1818 until the late 1960s, through four generations, Adamo, Giulio, Scipione and Enrico, who made over 500 works in it. It was later bought by the Galleria Antiquaria Benucci and reopened to the public in 2003 as a restaurant and café inside a museum. About 400 works are shown: sketches, preparatory models, marble and bronze sculpture, anatomical studies, tools and documents.
