Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis

Historic site · Vatican City, Vatican City

A Roman burial ground on the terraced slopes beside the stretch of the Via Triumphalis nearest the city, bordering the Vatican Hill. The Museums sell it as a separate ticket category, and their table of temporary and extraordinary closures gives it as closed from 15 July to 3 September. It is a different site from the Vatican Necropolis under St Peter's Basilica, which the Fabbrica di San Pietro runs.

History

The tombs are collective and individual, set along paths and squares, and many carry inscribed funerary stelae naming the dead, largely people from the middle and lower ranks of imperial Roman society.
