Caserma dei Vigili
Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy
The barracks of the fire brigade, built round a porticoed courtyard with fountain troughs and rising at least two storeys. A chapel of the imperial cult stands on the far side of the courtyard and a corner latrine keeps an aedicula of Fortuna.
History
Built at the end of the first century AD, when a standing cohort of vigiles was stationed at Ostia; the layout visible now is the Hadrianic rebuild, and the chapel was monumentalised in the early third century AD.
