Grandi Horrea
Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy
A grain warehouse of the excavated town, built round a colonnaded tufa courtyard with storage cellae on three sides.
History
Traditionally dated to the reign of Claudius, between 41 and 54 AD, with recent work proposing a first phase in the first century BC. It was rebuilt entirely in brick between the end of the second and the start of the third century AD, when two further rows of cellae were added in the courtyard, a first floor was built, and the floors were raised on suspensurae to keep the grain dry.
