Horrea Epagathiana et Epaphroditiana

Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy

A brick warehouse of about the middle of the second century AD, with a yellow-and-red brick portal, a mosaic-paved colonnaded court, sixteen rooms and at least two storeys.

History

The surviving inscription over the doorway names the owners Epagathus and Epaphroditus, probably two freedmen of Greek origin. Two aediculae in the court held statuettes of Fortuna and Venus. The double entrance door has been read as evidence that the building stored goods of value.
