Necropoli della via Ostiense

Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy

The tomb road outside Porta Romana, on Via delle Tombe. Two of its monuments carry their own panels: the Tomba degli Archetti and the Colombari gemelli.

History

The Tomba degli Archetti was built at the start of the first century AD as a funerary enclosure in reticulate work; its north facade carries brick architectural members under arches, with the lunettes inlaid in yellow and red brick alternating with tufa and pumice. It was converted into a columbarium in the second half of the first century AD, and larger arcosolia were added from the second. The Colombari gemelli are two independent tombs of the first half of the first century AD built to the same plan, each with an open vestibule and a covered chamber of urn niches, and terrace roofs reached by stairs for funerary banquets; the ustrinum lay in the space between them.
