Piazzale delle Corporazioni
Historic site · Ostia Antica, Italy
The porticoed square behind the theatre, its floor paved with black-and-white mosaics carrying trading motifs and inscriptions that name Ostian and foreign guilds of merchants and shipowners.
History
Laid out with the theatre in the Augustan age and given its porticoes only under Claudius, in the middle of the first century AD. A temple on a high podium with two Corinthian columns was raised at the centre towards the end of the first century AD; the panel records that its dedicatee is not identified. The portico was doubled and the first mosaics laid in the first half of the second century AD, and they were remade later as the space was divided into stationes.
