Mura repubblicane e Porta Romana

The town wall and the gate that carried the road from Rome into it. Porta Romana had two bays and keeps part of its marble facing; of the two Minerva-Victory statues that flanked it, one original is in the Museo Ostiense and a copy stands in the piazzale.
History
The walls were built about the middle of the first century BC on three sides of the town, enclosing about sixty-nine hectares behind three gates flanked by square towers. The inscription from the attic, recorded on both faces, states that the Senate and People of Rome decreed the walls of the Ostian colony, that Marcus Tullius Cicero began the work and let the contract, and that Publius Clodius Pulcher, tribune of the plebs, completed and approved it.
