Theater · Ostia Antica, Italy
The town's theatre, on the Decumano Massimo inside the excavations, still used for performance. The Teatro di Roma runs the Teatro Ostia antica Festival - Il senso del passato here; its second edition runs from 25 June to 18 July 2026 with four productions, by Terzopoulos, Peltekis, Preljocaj and Dini.
History
Built in the last years of the first century BC and attested by an inscription naming Agrippa, then enlarged at the end of the second century AD to hold four thousand spectators. An arch in honour of Caracalla was thrown across the Decumanus at the entrance in 216 AD. A marble parapet was built later to isolate the cavea from the orchestra during water shows.
