Palazzo Borromeo has housed Italy's embassy to the Holy See since 1929. It was built in 1561 to a design by Pirro Ligorio for Pius IV, is owned by the Italian state, and is not open to the public. It stands on Italian soil, on the via Flaminia frontage, with its entrance on via delle Belle Arti.
History
It was raised on Julius III's old vineyard, the same three vineyards that carry Villa Giulia and Villa Poniatowski, and it was built up against the pre-existing Fontana di papa Giulio III, which still faces the junction of via Flaminia and via di Villa Giulia. Its interiors carry stuccoes and frescoes commissioned by Pius IV and Marcantonio Colonna.
