Palazzo Marina

The Ministry of the Navy commissioned the building from the architect Giulio Magni; the commission dates from 1912, which is why the design keeps Roman Liberty, barocchetto and eclectic elements. It was inaugurated on 28 October 1928. The site covers 31,000 square metres, of which 11,500 are built over and 4,580 are courtyards and gardens; the building is 28 metres high and 142 metres long, with six storeys and an attic and about 750 rooms. The river-front entrance is flanked by the anchors of the Austro-Hungarian battleships Tegetthoff, on the left, and Viribus Unitis, on the right; the elevations are brick and travertine, with reliefs, sculpture and glass on marine themes.
