Palazzo Savelli Orsini

Baldassarre Peruzzi raised the palace in the 1500s for the Savelli on the ruins of the theatre, which was already a medieval fortress of the Pierleoni and the Fabi. In 1729 Ferdinando Bernualdo Filippo Orsini d'Aragona, of the dukes of Gravina, bought it for 29,000 scudi; Benedict XIII, of the same family, had legitimated him to the Roman Orsini succession. The new owners moved the family archive there from the palazzo di Monte Giordano and added three ranges around the garden, entered from the square through a gate between piers carrying the family's heraldic bears. The painter Giacomo Zoboli lived there from 1760 until his death in 1767.
