Piazza di Campitelli
Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Italy
A square in rione Sant'Angelo that carries a neighbouring rione's name. Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli stands at no. 9, the Palazzetto di Flaminio Ponzio closes the short east end at no. 6, and Palazzo Clementi stands on it.
History
it.wikipedia's article on the square says that it takes its name from the rione of the same name. It records that the medieval church of Santa Maria in Campitello stood where Palazzo Caetani Lovatelli now is, and that Palazzo Clementi stands where the tower called del Merangolo was absorbed into the house of Fabrizio de Massimi. The church on the square was attributed to rione Sant'Angelo when Sant'Angelo's boundaries were extended around the middle of the twentieth century.
