Piazza dell'Enciclopedia Italiana (formerly piazza Paganica)

Historic site · Sant'Angelo, Italy

The square at the north-east corner of the Isola Mattei, carrying Palazzo Mattei di Paganica and Palazzo Guglielmi Chiablese. it.wikipedia lists it under both its present name and its former one, piazza Paganica; via Paganica and vicolo Paganica are separate streets.

History

The old church of Santi Sebastiano e Valentino dei Mercanti stood in the middle of the square and was demolished; the wing of Palazzo Guglielmi Chiablese that faces the square was added afterwards. The square takes its present name from the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana, whose seat is Palazzo Mattei di Paganica.
