The mosque of Rome and the seat of the Centro islamico culturale d'Italia, on viale della Moschea at the foot of the Monti Parioli and Monte Antenne, next to the Acqua Acetosa sports facilities. It occupies 30,000 square metres of ground and holds up to 12,000 worshippers, and about 30,000 to 40,000 on major feasts such as the Feast of the Sacrifice. Its style is described as postmodern and Islamic.
History
It was designed by Paolo Portoghesi, Vittorio Gigliotti, Sami Mousawi and Nino Tozzo. Building began in 1984 and the mosque opened on 21 June 1995.
