Piazza Colonna

Roma Capitale calls Piazza Colonna the «centro degli affari e della vita politica della città», the centre of the city's business and political life. Its own description gives the buildings that bound it: Palazzo Chigi, Palazzo Ferrajoli — earlier Del Bufalo, then Aldobrandini, then Niccolini — the small church of the Santi Bartolomeo e Alessandro dei Bergamaschi on the right, Palazzo Wedekind opposite, and behind them the palazzo of the Galleria Colonna, now known as the Galleria Alberto Sordi. The fountain and the column stand at the centre.

History

The square is one of the public spaces that the Italian Wikipedia article on the rione names as the line between Colonna and Trevi, which is a caution rather than a contradiction: where a rione boundary is defined as a street or a square, mapping data draws the line along one kerb and the whole space then falls inside whichever side the mapper chose. This guide therefore treats Piazza Colonna as the rione's own square, because the buildings around it are in Colonna, and states no date for when the square was laid out: the sixteenth-century date often attached to it is not on Roma Capitale's page and no other source for it was reached.
