Il Quartiere Moderno, the planned quarter of Testaccio

The rione read as a piece of planning, and one of the subjects the Museo diffuso explains on its panels: a residential quarter built from the end of the nineteenth century for the workers of the industries settling along the via Ostiense. Its streets are dedicated to explorers, navigators, entrepreneurs, shipowners, engineers, scientists, publishers, printers and artists — Volta, Galvani, Franklin, Manuzio, Bodoni, Ghiberti, Vespucci, Rubattino, Zabaglia — which is a workable key to walking it.
History
Testaccio was detached in 1921 from the large and thinly populated rione Ripa, and Roma Capitale's tourism service gives 1921 for the rione's institution as well. The first master plan of the capital, in 1873, had already placed industrial expansion in the Ostiense area, favoured by flat ground, the via Ostiense, the river port and the railway. The rione's arms are recorded by Carlo Pietrangeli, in Insegne e stemmi dei rioni di Roma, Capitolium XXVIII/6, 1953, p. 190, as "Di rosso all'anfora d'oro", gules an amphora or. The school building on via Alessandro Volta, now the Istituto Comprensivo Elsa Morante, was built between 1920 and 1923 to a design by the architect Augusto Antonelli.
