A distributed museum rather than a building: a route across the rione created by the Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Roma, with teaching panels, a play-and-learn area for children, and bookable access to the Emporium, the Porticus Aemilia archaeological park and the archaeological area under the Nuovo Mercato. Roma Capitale's tourism service describes the rione route as freely accessible; bookings for the enclosed sites go to sottosopra.testaccio@gmail.com. Seventeen of its panels stand in the rione.
History
The route covers much of the rione's roughly 60 hectares, a figure the market's own site repeats. Its inventory also names buildings that stand outside Testaccio and says so: the Palazzo delle Poste on via Marmorata is in rione San Saba and the Arco di San Lazzaro is in rione Ripa. What stands on via Giovanni Branca is a panel telling the story of the tomb of Servius Sulpicius Galba, and not the tomb, which is at the Parco archeologico del Celio.
