San Girolamo della Carità

Tradition puts the origin in 382, when Damasus set Jerome to work on the Bible and Jerome was lodged in the domus of the matron Paola, later turned into a church. In 1524 Clement VII gave the complex to the Confraternita della Carità. San Filippo Neri lived in the adjoining convent for over thirty years from 1551 and began there the meetings that became the oratorio; his rooms survive. The church burned in 1631 and was rebuilt. The Cappella Spada of 1654 is by Virgilio Spada, perhaps with Borromini: jasper and marble revetment, and in place of a balustrade two white marble angels holding a jasper eucharistic cloth, the right-hand angel's wooden wings swinging on pivots to let people through.
