San Paolo alla Regola

Historic site · Regola, Italy

A church on a Greek-cross plan under a dome with four corner chapels, a rectory of the Third Order Regular of St Francis and the seat of a diaconia. It gives the rione its name.

History

Excavations between 1978 and 1982 found stratified walls on four building levels above a Roman street line that survives today; from the age of Augustus the buildings held warehouses and river trades, tent- and sail-making among them. Tradition holds that Paul lodged and wrote here, and a room inside is shown as his. The church is attested from the thirteenth century and was rebuilt at the end of the seventeenth by Giovanni Battista Bergonzoni. A slab of 1096 from the older church survives on the high altar, and there is a fourteenth-century Madonna delle Grazie.
