Santa Caterina della Rota

Historic site · Regola, Italy

A church of a single nave with three niches a side, its late-Baroque façade of 1730 carrying the arms of the Chapter of St Peter's in the tympanum. It has been administered since 1929 by the Venerabile Arciconfraternita dei Palafrenieri; the phone, 06 6865407, is answered on Sundays only.

History

The church is recorded in the twelfth-century Mirabilia Urbis Romae and in a bull of Urban III as a parish under San Lorenzo in Damaso, originally as Santa Maria in Catenariis. It was restored in the sixteenth century to a design by Ottaviano Mascherino and rededicated to Catherine of Alexandria. Its polychrome coffered wooden ceiling of the sixteenth century was brought here from San Francesco d'Assisi a Ponte Sisto when that church and the Ospizio dei Centopreti were demolished for the lungotevere. The funerary memorial of the engraver Giuseppe Vasi is here.
