Santa Maria della Quercia

The church stands on the site of the medieval San Nicolò de Curte, part of an Orsini courtyard complex. Julius II allowed Viterbesi living in Rome to bring the cult of the Madonna della Quercia here, the oak being also the della Rovere emblem; many of those Viterbesi were butchers, and the butchers' corporation made the church its confraternity seat. It was rebuilt from scratch in the early eighteenth century by Filippo Raguzzini and continued by Domenico Gregorini. Piazza della Quercia was merged with piazza Capo di Ferro in the early twentieth century by demolishing the block between them.
