Santa Maria in Monticelli

A church named from a rise in the ground, perhaps rubble, that put it above the Tiber floods. Of the medieval building there survive the three-aisled basilica plan and the Romanesque campanile, together with a fragment of the twelfth-century apse mosaic showing the Face of Christ and a fresco of a holy pontiff in a counter-façade niche.
History
The church is first recorded in the life of Paschal II, who restored it in 1101, and was reconsecrated by Innocent II in 1143. The campanile was cut from seven storeys to five under Paul V for stability. Matteo Sassi rebuilt the church entirely in 1716 for Clement XI; Benedict XIII gave it to the Dottrinari, whose curia generalizia it remains, and Francesco Azzurri restored it again in 1860, which produced its present look.
