Historic site · Ripa, Italy

The former pasta works on via dei Cerchi, along the Circus Maximus. Since 1931 the rear of the building, facing the circus, has held the costume and scenery stores and some technical services of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. It now also houses Roma Capitale's Dipartimento Sviluppo Economico, Attivita Produttive e Agricoltura.

History

Built between 1878 and 1881 on the initiative of Michelangelo Pantanella, to designs by the engineer Pio Scarselli, to hold the offices and ovens of the Societa dei Molini e Pastificio Pantanella; at the time the whole Circus Maximus valley still held industrial plant, including the gasworks. The firm moved to via Casilina in 1929 and the works were restructured as the Palazzo dei Musei di Roma, housing the Museo dell'Impero romano, opened 9 June 1929, and the Museo della Citta di Roma, opened 21 April 1930. The building closed in 1939 and in 1952 the two collections went to the Museo della civilta romana at EUR and the Museo di Roma at Palazzo Braschi.
